Connemara 12 Year Old Single Malt is the quintessential Irish peated Single Malt whiskey.
It is a double distilled Single Malt whiskey produced at the Cooley Distillery in Co. Louth and matured for 12 years in ex American oak casks. It is part of a range of peated Connemara whiskeys produced by Cooley, ranging from the regular Connemara to cask strength editions, cask finishes and heavily peated versions.
The 12 Year Old Connemara is a medium peated, gently fruity and smooth Single Malt. On the nose it has distinctive peat and malt notes, with some subtle orchard fruits in the background. The taste is smooth with peat and green apple and there is a strong spice bite in the finish, with creamy peatiness remaining in the mouth.
Combining peated whiskeys with food is extremely interesting and sometimes difficult, as the key is to marry the peat element in the malt with flavours that will neither clash, nor be overpowered by it. Interestingly, it is often strongly flavoured foods that work best - try the suggestions below!
