The Heritage Resort & The Heritage Bar – Killenard

The Heritage Golf & Spa Resort in Killenard is a modern luxury 5 star hotel and resort.  Located in County Laois, in the heart of the Irish midlands, and off the usual beaten tourist track, it is an excellent location for anyone wanting to enjoy peace and quiet in luxury surroundings, with top class golf and spa facilities.  At the same time, because of its central location, the Heritage is an hour or less drive away from some of Ireland’s many attractions.  Nestled close to the foot of The Slieve Bloom Mountains, on the Laois/Kildare border and just an hour from Dublin, The Heritage Golf & Spa resort has something for everyone.

This hotel and lifestyle resort features a 98 guestroom 5 star hotel, a championship golf course co-designed by Seve Ballesteros & Jeff Howes, a magnificent club house, resort spa, the Seve Ballesteros ‘Natural’ Golf School, health club with pool, children’s games room, tennis court, trim trial, a 5 km ground lit walking track, self catering two bedroom suite apartments and a variety of restaurants and bars to choose from.

For the whiskey enthusiast, the Heritage offers two main advantages. First, its central location - within 45 minutes of The Locke’s Distillery in Kilbeggan and the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre, or just over an hour from the Old  Jameson Distillery in Dublin and within minutes’ of two of the Ireland Whiskey Trail’s most unusual and memorable pubs: Mooney’s Pub in Monasterevin and The Fishersman’s Thatched Inn in Fisherstown.

The second key whiskey highlight of the Heritage in Killenard is its well stocked whiskey bar with an excellent range of over 50 Irish and Scottish whiskies.  The Whiskey Man here is the Food & Beverage Manager, a young man by the name of Aidan Cotter.  Aidan’s introduction to whiskey started in Kenmare, but reached its full potential in Gleneagles in Scotland, where 120 malts awaited guests.  This is where he was trained to conduct in house whisky tastings for guests, giving him an unparallel love and exposure to whiskey – even afternoon tea in Scotland took on a whisky twist!  Back in Ireland at The Heritage Resort, he immediately introduced a whiskey collection with a strong emphasis on Irish whiskey.  Both Aidan and his colleagues can now offer up good conversation on the selections of whiskeys available on The Resort and on the local Irish whiskey distilleries.  Additionally, he can offer formal or informal Whiskey Tastings for groups from 10 to 30 - guests can choose between Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky tastings or a combination of both can also be done.

The Heritage Resort offers many resort seasonal packages throughout the year.  For longer or family stays, the onsite apartments are an attractive option.  For a real leisurely afternoon, consider cycling the quiet roads in this very rural part of Ireland.  There is also a lovely walk along the nearby Grand Canal – talk to the hotel’s reception or ask Sean in the Fisherman’s Thatch – they’ll point you in the right direction. For further travel, The Heritage Golf & Spa Resort is situated approximately one hour from Dublin and is just off the Dublin to Cork road and the M7 motorway.
