Built in 1739 by the 19th Earl of Kildare, Robert Fitzgerald, as his country’s family seat, Carton House sits on 1,100-acres of parklands. Royalty, musicians and stars of the silver screen – from Queen Victoria to Grace Kelly – have passed through the doors of Carton House and its timeless appeal has been thoughtfully preserved into a 165-bedroom hotel.
Today, the hotel seamlessly combines historic tradition with the contemporary – behind the imposing facade of this country house, guests can enjoy the stunning design of the reception areas and bedrooms or the charm and beauty of the old world in stunningly ornate dining rooms, such as the Gold Salon and Morrison Room. This unique atmosphere, where old and new combine, complement each other to stunning effect.
Amidst everything else that makes Carton House special, this hotel is also aiming to have the best Cooley Whiskey Bar in the world and every time we visit, new whiskeys have been added to tempt us. Cooley is Ireland’s smallest and only independent whiskey distillery, yet it is responsible for producing a very impressive array of quality whiskeys, from blends and single malts, to Ireland’s only peated and single grain whiskeys. Carton House has endeavoured to stock every Cooley whiskey ever produced, and guests can enjoy this exciting collection in the relaxing surroundings of the Kitchen Bar, where once again, the old and the new combine in elegant harmony. For those wanting to develop their whiskey knowledge and tasting skills, Carton House also offers a Cooley whiskey tasting, with a choice of 4 of Cooley’s best known whiskeys. Their whiskey menu extends to a range of interesting and novel whiskey cocktails, as well as a classic Irish Coffee. Their whiskey collection also extends to whiskeys from Ireland's other distilleries, thereby offering guests one of Ireland's most comprehensive whiskey selections. For larger groups, the hotel can organise private whiskey tastings or master classes in the stunning surroundings of their private reception or dining rooms.
The facilities at Carton House include the Spa at Carton House, the Kitchen Bar, a conference centre and The Linden Tree Restaurant. The Linden Tree serves modern cuisine in a contemporary space punctuated by amazing views of Carton’s woodlands through huge picture windows. The most recent addition to the Carton House experience is the arrival of Ireland Xtreme with activities including exhilarating 4x4 driving, archery, clay pigeon shooting and team building games. Carton also boasts two championship golf courses, the Montgomerie and the O’Meara and is home to the Golfing Union of Ireland head quarters and National Coaching Academy.
