The Creamery Bar & Restaurant – Bunratty

The location for the Creamery Bar and Restaurant is ideal – only about 15 minutes’ drive from Shannon airport and an ideal half way place to stop if you are travelling on the Kerry-Galway road. And, just to add to the “must stop” factor, it is also located directly across from the famous Bunratty Castle Folk Park.

Originally a stop for the Bianconi coach service in the mid 1800’s, it became the local creamery in 1927, and it is this recent history which provides much of the décor and atmosphere for the bar. The old creamery’s original steam generator and pipes provide an original centrepiece and if you wander a little further into the bar, do admire all the old photographs on the stone walls recalling the history of the creamery and its importance to the local people.

The Creamery Bar is famous for serving an excellent pint of Guinness and you can even buy your own commemorative pint glass to bring home. It is also an excellent place to enjoy a good Irish whiskey, with more than 25 different whiskeys to choose from. If history is what you want, and you want to sample a whiskey distilled when this place was still a creamery (it ceased collecting milk in 1976), then you should sample one of the old Redbreast Pure Pot Stills with its distinctive red top and neck collar – you’ll find the bottle placed on the top shelf of the bar for safe keeping, so as not to confuse it with the current version of Redbreast 12 Year Old. The Creamery Bar’s owners, David and Noel, also bought a cask of Bushmills Millennium Malt in 2000. They like to keep it for customers they think will truly appreciate this exceptional 25 year old Single Malt, so if ever you wanted to pass off as a whiskey connoisseur, the Creamery Bar may just be the place to do it!

The Creamery Bar also offers an extensive bar menu (the seafood chowder is excellent) and there is usually live music at weekends. There is also a restaurant upstairs if you want a more extensive menu. So all in all, it’s a great Irish pub to spend some time in, whether you are travelling or spending the night in Bunratty. And if you are staying in Bunratty, then we’d like to recommend Dunaree B&B. In all our travels around Ireland to find our favourite whiskey pubs and bars, it’s probably the nicest B&B we have ever stayed in, and Penny, who owns it, is what every Irish B&B lady should be.
