Ireland is obviously the ideal place to enjoy an Irish Whiskey Tasting. We produce many different styles and types of whiskey and it is always an interesting and enjoyable experience to sample and compare some of these different whiskeys, and discover what makes them different. You can devise your own whiskey tasting, sitting with a couple of friends in one of the pubs from this Whiskey Trail, having selected a different whiskey each, maybe after some recommendations from the barman, and then proceed to compare and try to distinguish the subtle or not so subtle differences between each whiskey.
Alternatively, you could enjoy a guided Whiskey Tasting, where you can discover not only the attributes, appreciate the nose and taste of various whiskeys, but also learn about distillation, maturation, blending, etc - effectively discover the reasons and secrets behind each different whiskey.
The Irish Whiskey Event
If you are travelling to Ireland as a group, the Irish Whiskey Event can offer you a tailor made Irish Whiskey Tasting in a location of your choice. The Irish Whiskey Event is managed by Heidi Donelon, one of Ireland's foremost whiskey experts, and winner of the Ambassador of the Year Whisky Icon ROW 2010. The Irish Whiskey Event offers you a choice of different Whiskey Tastings. You could enjoy a Traditional Tasting, discovering Ireland's best known and loved whiskeys or a Premium Tasting, enjoying aged pot still and single malt whiskeys, or for the Whiskey connoisseurs, an Irish Whiskey Masterclass, where you can savour some of the very best whiskeys Ireland has to offer. A Whiskey Tasting can also be combined with a Chocolate Tasting (delicious!) or with a Whiskey Tasting Competition (great fun!). The Irish Whiskey Event always provides an informative, but fun and relaxed environment to discover and enjoy Irish whiskeys. For more information please contact the Irish Whiskey Event by email or check out the website on www.irishwhiskeyevent.com.
Each of the distilleries on The Ireland Whiskey Trail offer a complimentary glass of whiskey after the tour.
These distileries also offer guests the opportunity to pre-book whiskey tastings for groups or individuals, so do contact them directly be email or phone before your tour if you want to include a full Tasting as part of your tour. For example, a comparison tasting is included at the Old Jameson Distillery, followed by a signature Jameson Ginger and Lime Drink. At the Jameson Experience in Midleton, volunteers are selected to partake in the comparison tasting after the tour (for true whiskey lovers, both Jameson Distillery Experiences offer whiskey masterclasses and tastings from the Jameson famly and Midleton Single Pot Still range). The Tullamore D.E.W. Visitor Centre offers a Special Reserve Tour which includes an in-depth whiskey tasting and the Kilbeggan Distillery offer a Gold Medal Tour which includes a full comparative Tasting.
Pubs and Hotels
Some of the Irish pubs and hotel bars on The Ireland Whiskey Trail can offer an informal whiskey tasting. Here is a list of the pubs and bars where you should be able to enjoy a Tasting. Most of the staff in these pubs have had formal whiskey training, however, if possible, ask if they have a Whiskey Champion, who will be the staff member most knowledgeable about whiskey. You should always contact them beforehand to check if they can organise a Tasting for you.
